The Syrian crisis has created a new cold war environment that calls on countries to take sides. This new environment has given rise to a state of "inaction" which has worked well for the Assad regime.

As long as the AK Party remains in charge of Turkish foreign policy, the national conversation pertaining to these issues will remain ideologically charged.

If anyone actually thought that the Arab revolts, the most recent wave of change in the Middle East, would allow Iran and Israel to put pressure on the region, though, time has proved them wrong.

Almost no one, other than those who initiated the December 17th corruption investigation and those who do their bidding in the media, perceive these events as “simply an investigation into corruption”.

Only time will tell whether a desire for such change will emerge in the political in Iran, and if it does, whether it will be achieved. Similarly, the answer to the question “Does the West prefer a normalized Iran in the region” is yet to become clear.

The West makes an effort to win Iran back because a controllable Iran is the most natural ally of the West in the region.

Unless the US immediately broadens its perspective, there will be no guarantees that the new agreement with Iran will not suffer the same fate the Tehran agreement Turkey and Brazil achieved three years ago.

The disagreement between Turkey and the US on the Syrian issue and the coup d’état in Egypt are contributing factors to increased criticism of Turkey in Washington.

If Iran under RouhaniÂ’s leadership adopts a foreign policy based on less defiance and more cooperation, it can contribute to TurkeyÂ’s regional vision that prioritizes stability and peace.
